Dr. Matthew Mitchell was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Texas, where he graduated with honors in biomedical engineering. While he found the technology behind integrated medical practices fascinating, he discovered that what he loved most was working directly with patients, which led him to pursue medical school at the University of Texas at Houston.

It was in medical school that Dr. Mitchell quickly developed a passion for plastic and reconstructive surgery.  He completed the first part of his residency at the University of Tennessee, where he trained extensively in trauma reconstruction, facial trauma, and microsurgical techniques, and gained additional experience in pediatric plastic surgery through St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He went on to complete his plastic surgery training at Indiana University, further refining his skills in microsurgery, general reconstruction, and aesthetic surgery under the guidance of some of the field’s foremost leaders.

Dr. Mitchell then completed an Aesthetic Society–endorsed fellowship, a distinction pursued by only a select number of plastic surgeons following their formal training. It was during this fellowship, spent in Florida, that he fell in love with St. Johns County and knew he wanted to build his career and his family there. He is board certified in plastic surgery, has numerous papers in the field, and has presented his work nationally. He remains actively engaged with the Aesthetic Society, serving as a peer reviewer for the Aesthetic Surgery Journal and participating on its committees.

After working as an associate surgeon for a large group practice, Dr. Mitchell recognized an unmet need in the community for more personalized, patient-centered care. In 2026, he started Saint Johns Plastic Surgery to give patients more of his time and a more personalized, hands-on experience.

Outside the practice, Dr. Mitchell loves spending time with his wife, Rachel, and their three children, exploring everything Jacksonville has to offer as a family. He is also an avid cyclist, occasional marathoner, and an average golfer.
